HawthoRNe is back for a second season and I’m so happy! It’s a great show with heart-gripping storylines and unconventional casting. If you didn’t get a chance to see the first season, let me give you a little background. Jada Pinkett-Smith (who also serves as the show’s executive producer) stars as Christina Hawthorne– a head nurse of a Virginia hospital and recent widow– and the mother of a biracial daughter. I especially love this because in just about every TV show and movie, we see black men hooking up with women of various races and ethnicities, but never black women with men of other races. And though her character’s husband is deceased, the show is still hinting at an interracial relationship. I say hinting because viewers got a glimpse of a possible budding romance between Christina and her her attending doctor (Dr. Thom Wakefield), portrayed by the ever-so-handsome Michael Vartan, when they locked lips in an episode during the premiere season. This is something I can’t wait to see blossom!
What I also love is how the execs got it right when they casted Hannah Hodson as Christina’s daughter– Camille. I’m not sure if Hodson is biracial in real life, but she certainly looks the part. And she’s just adorable, with a great head of hair. (You know I had to throw that in… this is a blog about my hair journey, and I’ll talk about hair every chance I get). Pinkett-Smith also wears her hair natural often on the show, as well.
Veteran actress, Joanna Cassidy, also makes appearances as Christina’s mother-in-law. And though the two characters don’t see eye-to-eye, Cassidy’s character loves Camille– her granddaughter and they have a loving relationship.
